BIG BEAR HIGH SCHOOL Alumni News
March 14, 2004
Two of our alumni in the news ...
Kim Feeley who graduated in the 80's is working on the space rover that landed on Mars recently.
It is my understanding that Kim personally receives the messages from
one of Rover 's cameras and translates the data for Cal Tech. When I
learn more I will send it along.
Mike Bumstead 90's graduate, reported to the San Diego Padres baseball team training camp
and hopes to make either Double A or Triple A with the Padres Farm team
this year. Sharon Bumstead is going to sent me more information about
how Mike is progressing. Wow!!! I'm impressed.
Editor's note: I still am active with California State University in
training secondary teachers for their credentials and for the past six
months I have been visiting Rim of the World High School in Arrowhead.
Low and behold, I ran into Chuck Lane (who married Carol Winnans - I
performed the ceremony in Big Bear back many years ago) who is teaching
Psychology at RIM. Each time I visit my students at RIM, I drop by
Chuck's class to see Chuck.
Here is Chuck's e mail to me this week:
Finally getting around to this email. I hope you don't mind the
familiar salutation, but it's born out of comfort rather than any lack
of respect. Or maybe it's just that we're getting too old to have to
worry about it all anymore ... oh, those illusory images.
At any rate, it's been a pleasant pleasure to see you at Rim on
occasion. I don't know ... time drifts, or I drift through it ...
sometimes. Let's just say it's nice to see you around - you still
have that amiable smile, energetic presence - you seem to be doing
well. May He continue to bless you.
I am, of course, interested in receiving the newsletter you
mentioned. And I also think it would be nice to get together sometime,
away from school, and just visit ... you know what I mean? Be sure to
stop by as you pass through the halls.
A fellow wayfarer in time, Chuck Lane.
Appreciated the e mail from Ann Nelson, class of 82:
Hi. I'm Ann Nelson and I graduated from BBHS in 1982. I regret that I
missed our 20 year reunion, but hopefully there will be another reunion
in the future. With regard to my career, I've worked as a legal
secretary for the last 20 years, and now I am a Judicial Assistant to an
Appellate Court Justice with the Court of Appeals for the Second
District in Los Angeles. About four years ago, I attended the
University of California, Irvine, and obtained a certificate in
paralegal studies. And, currently, I am attending classes at Golden
West College working towards a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice.
I own a home in beautiful Huntington Beach, California, and live with my
son, Sean (11 yrs.) and my long-time boyfriend, Ed. I really enjoy
getting the emails and reading about people's lives since graduating
from BBHS. It's very interesting. Maybe someone will remember me from our class, and if they
do, they should write about it! (Another hint, I painted bears on the
wall in the (your) principal's office in the old high school building.
That was one of the best times I had at school!) And another bit of
trivia, my mother, Luann Beeman (former name, Luann Stokesberry), worked
as a bookkeeper for Richard Kun at Snow Summit for a very long time.
She now works for the Mojave Water Agency in Apple Valley, CA. Anyway,
I hope this helps out in your survey, and it was fun sharing info with
anyone who will see this email. Can't wait for your next email!
Great e mail from Marie and Gary Wanke:
Al, Thanks for the nice e-mail. As always we really enjoy them. You
mentioned in the e-mail if you want to be removed from receiving them,
click here. Who or why would anyone want to be removed. They are great
and we love to get them even as old and as long ago since we
graduated. There is usually someone we recognize. It was so great to
get the update on Patrick and Mallory. As you may remember we were
neighbors of Patrick and his mom for 19 years. Thanks for his e-mail
address, we will be in touch with him.
Saddened to learn of the passing of Tommy Sanchez (Jr.). Tom (Sr.) was
Gary and my favorite teacher when we were in high school. Jean was a
special teacher to our girls too. We will get a card off to them.
We were in Huntington Beach last Saturday to attend a memorial service
for Kimberly Smith. Kim graduated in
1979 with our daughter Sherri. Kim was the daughter of Smitty
(deceased) and Sally Smith. She has a brother, Rick, and a 13 year
old daughter Sami. Ennis and Edith Powell were her grandparents (both
deceased). Edith was a long time employee of the school district
cafeteria. Kim was 42 years old. As a child she was little heavy and had
a staple put in her stomach in hopes of losing weight 19 years ago. She
underwent over 50 surgeries since that procedure was done and was ill
the rest of her life. In October she developed an infection and
antibiotics were not helping and eventually it took her life.
Neal (Ed. Note: Neal Waner, president of the SGM/BBHS Foundation),
shared with the SGM board that a donation had been made to the
Foundation from Carl and Betty Benson. Carl was the principal at Big
Bear High School when Gary and I graduated in 1956. At that time the
district was Victor Valley Joint Union and unified as Bear Valley
Unified School District in 1958. My brother Bud Camomile graduated in
1957 and I know Carl was still the principal at that time. I am unsure
when he left the district, but we still here from him from time to time,
especially when our reunions roll around or longtime valley residents
pass away. Dr. Reynolds may know when Carl left the district as he
became principal after that (I am guessing around 1961). Carl's wife
Betty is the sister to Bill Betterley who was once our San Bernardino
County Supervisor. Betty was also the first Snow Queen for Bear Valley
(1946-48?). Keep up the good work. We continue to appreciate your
extra efforts in keeping us informed. See you soon.
Gary and Marie Wanke
(Editors note: I had Kim Smith as a student at Big Bear Middle School
and Big Bear High School. She was a fun loving young lady. Her
grandparents, Ennis and Edith Powell were friends of my parents in
Compton in the 40‚s and 50‚s in our church in Compton. Small World!!!
The donation to the SGM/BBHS Foundation from the Bensons was deeply
appreciated and will be matched by Steven Mihaylo.)
Congratulations to our webmaster, Zoltan Bircsak, on his new position with
San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools as Senior Software Systems Developer. AL
Keep the news flowing.... It's always good to hear from you. Al
