Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. This will be the last e mail for this year and I hope it has been as much fun for you as it has for me. With all the junk e mail we recieve I hope this a little breeze of freshness to your life. Thank you to all of you who sent us e mails or cards for Christmas. You never get tired of hearing from friends. I even read all the letters in the Christmas Cards. JoAnne and I are looking forward to being with our family this Christmas. We will be together in Redlands at Neal‚s home in Redlands. Scott tells me the skiing is great in Big Bear!!! With seven grandchildren we have a lot to be thankful for this year. I hope you have time to spend with your family and wish you God's richest blessing for a new year. Al

FOUNDATION MEETING:
We had a wonderful Stephen G. Mihalyo BBHS Foundation Board meeting on Monday, November 17. We welcomed two new members to our Foundation Board, Jo Ann Sulzer and Dick Kun. These foundation meetings are really uplifting to hear and see what this foundation is doing for students in our valley. Four new grants have been awarded for this school year which will touch about 990 students in our schools. All scholarships have been paid for the past year. We have now given more than $100,00 in grants and scholarships and have more than $424,000 in endowment funds. Great job Board members, Keep it up Big Bear High Alumni.

The Foundation received a wonderful letter from Patricia Powell Lagerstrom.

To Big Bear HS Education Foundation,

Enclosed is a donation in the memory of Robert Emmett Powell, Big Bear High class of 1955. I met Bob in 1955 and we married in 1956. We had three children, Ronald, Vikki and Laura. Bob was very proud to have attended BBHS. I met his friends who also attended BBHS and I am still in touch with many of them. In 1968, Bob quit his job as manager of an engineering department and returned to college to pursue his degree and become a licensed psychologist. Unfortunately, he died December 4, 1970, from a heart attack at age 33. He left quite a void in the lives of his family. Now it has been 33 years since he died. I remarried a wonderful man in 1974 and he helped me amd my children get on with our lives. Bob was a very sensitive man who cared very muich for others and wanted to do what he could to help rid the world of poverty, prejudice and injustice. He wanted to make our world a better place to be.

With Warm Regands,
Patricia Powell Lagerstrom

Thank you Patricia and blessings upon you for supporting our Foundation. Your gift will be matched by Stephen Mihaylo and will become part of our endoument fund.

Received an e mail from Marie Wanke and I have her permission to pass it on to you:

OUR DAUGHTER SHERRI'S (SHERRI WANKE KIRBY, CLASS OF 1979), FIANCÉE (JERRY DRAKE) PASSED AWAY A WEEK AGO. AS YOU PROBABLY KNEW HE WAS ON DIALYSIS AND WAS WAITING TO RECEIVE A KIDNEY. HE WAS IN FAILING HEALTH AND PASSED AWAY SUDDENLY LAST FRIDAY. HE WAS ONLY 45 YEARS OLD. SHE RETURNED TO WORK THIS MORNING AND WE JUST TALKED TO HER AND SHE IS DOING PRETTY GOOD. THANK GOODNESS SHE HAS HER TWO CHILDREN (TIFFANY AND EDDIE) AND HER JOB TO KEEP HER BUSY.

WHAT A COINCIDENCE -
WHILE ON VACATION JUST RECENTLY WE TOOK A TOUR OF THE INDIANAPOLIS MOTOR SPEEDWAY. THEIR PROCEDURE THERE IS TO TAKE A BUS AND TOUR THE TRACK AND THEN VISIT THE MUSEUM, WHICH WE DID. AFTER GETTING OFF THE BUS A YOUNG LADY CAME UP TO US AND ASKED IF WERE LIVED IN THE AREA. I SAID NO I AM SORRY WE DON'T. SHE THEN ASKED WHERE ARE YOU FROM. I SAID CALIFORNIA. SHE STARTED TO ASKED WHERE AND THEN SHE SAID I KNEW IT ARE YOU FROM BIG BEAR LAKE. WE WERE QUITE SURPRISED. IT TURNED OUT TO BE MELINDA MESSINEO AND HER HUSBAND AND HER FATHER JOE THE BARBER. BOTH MELINDA AND HER HUSBAND ARE PROFESSORS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF INDIANA.

GARY AND MARIE WANKE, CLASS OF 1956
